Paint, Lace, and Old Hymn Pages

...is what I used for this...

I kinda like how it turned out.
I knew I wanted to Mod Podge something on the top of the table,
I just wasn't sure what.

I decided on using some hymn pages from an old hymnal.
A few years ago, an antique store had a clearance section of old books.
I snatched up quite a few hymn books for projects.

I pulled out pages with titles that ministered to me.

I arranged them first and then put a small piece of frog tape on so they would stay together.
(You could also use sticky tack underneath, I just didn't have any)

I thought there would be less of a chance of the paper ripping
when I took the tape off if I used the Frog Tape.

I made a crease all around the table except for the straight edge.
Then I carefully flipped the whole thing together and cut along the inside of the creased line,
and then put it back on top of the table.

I applied Mod Podge on the table a bit at a time starting at one end,
and immediately putting the sheets on.
(It was hard to take pictures doing this part)
Then I very carefully took the tape off and applied Mod Podge several times to the entire top.
A small amount of the ink came off when the tape came off but it actually adds to the vintage look.

There were a couple of air pockets but they eventually worked themselves out.
(That's why you have to do a bit at a time! It dries pretty quick.)
Give it a few coats to glue it and seal it.

Beautiful titles to some old hymns.

I painted the piece of the table where the lace is black, but it just didn't look right.
Then I thought about gluing some flat lace on top.
I have to say it adds a nice vintage touch.

Paint, Lace, and Old Hymn Pages

The table is sealed with clear wax with touches of dark wax for the distressed look.

I made my own chalk paint from Lowe's Olympic ICON,
and the colour of the paint is Brandied Pears.
If you're looking how to make your own chalk paint,
check the video below.

The recipe I use is: 3 tablespoons plaster of paris mixed with two tablespoons of warm water.
Stir the mixture well into one cup of latex paint of your colour choosing.

Before and After

I'm working on a little vignette for the table.

But that's for another post.

Have a great day!

Blessings,

The True Beauty of a Pitcher

We had the Target store in Canada for two years and they recently closed all their stores.
That meant everything was on sale.
As the closing date for our store got closer, the sales were better.
I had my eye on this pitcher for awhile.
I was waiting and hoping the price would come down.

On my last trip there I got it for $7.61
It is sitting pretty here on the black stool.
Black and white look sharp together.
It's not an antique but it's a pretty good imitation.
I've always been drawn to pitchers.
Not only is the pitcher beautiful in its craftsmanship, just search online and you'll see hundreds),
but there is such beauty in its purpose.
It's purpose is to serve.
Be it water to drink or warm water to fill a bath,
there were hands that filled it and hands that poured it.

The Milk Jug

The Gentle Milk Jug blue and white
I love with all my soul,
She pours herself with all her might
To fill my breakfast bowl.

All day she sits upon the shelf,
She does not jump or climb--
She only waits to pour herself
When 'tis my supper-time.

And when the Jus is empty quite,
I shall not mew in vain,
the Friendly Cow, all red and white,
Will fill her up again.

I love this picture of the kitten eagerly awaiting  his milk.
There is the hand on the jug pouring out the needed nourishment.
The poem is pretty sweet too.
We are to be vessels who God can use to pour into
so that we can pour into the lives of others to bring hope and healing.

In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver,
but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use.
Those who cleanse themselves from the latter
will be instruments for special purposes,
made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.
2 Timothy 2:20-21

"And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.” Matthew 10:42

Have a wonderful weekend,
and ask God how He can use you to bless someone else.

Blessings,

Ironstone Find at the Thrift Store

This past Wednesday, I had to drive to a town 45 minutes away after work to do patient training.
I always try to utilize that drive to do some thrift shopping.
I was hoping to do this visit on my day off so I could visit more shops,
but it didn't work out.
That left me with one thrift store that closes later.
I found an old ironstone gravy boat and a set of five white ironstone plates.
Isn't it cute?
I love the old patina.
According to the signature, this was made in the late 1800's to very early 1900's.
The handle is unique; it looks like a daisy.
I have lots of white ironstone dishes.
Different designs and names.
I was debating for awhile if I should even buy them.
But I love the soft waves on the outside of the plate.
I just couldn't help myself.
I also bought two pillowcases.
This one has a beautiful lace border in an off white colour.
I always look in that section because there are so many things you can do with them.
(That's for another post)
This pillowcase has an eyelet trim.
I have always loved eyelet.
So pretty.
All in all, I had a very productive evening!
This gravy boat I found while visiting my folks a few months ago.
I couldn't believe I saw the gravy boat and the dish.
You must know that feeling you get when you think you've found something wonderful.
You lift it up and look at the back.
And sure enough, there are those words you were hoping to see.
That's how I felt this past Wednesday when I saw the brown ironstone.
I wasn't planning on starting a gravy boat collection.
I really don't have the space.
But how do you pass it up?
Only if you can get rid of some of your other stuff.
That's what I did today.
I dropped lots of stuff off at the mission store.
Then I parked the car and walked in and shopped.
This is what I bought today.
Two lampshades and two plate holders.
Brand new too!
I thought maybe they belonged together.
Not sure if this is where they are staying.
But it works for now.
They add a nice touch to this corner of the room.
Have you found any treasures recently?

Blessings,

Never Too Cold to Thrift Shop!!

The last few days here in Southern Ontario have been blustery cold days!!!
I have always loved Winnie the Pooh.
This is the blustery without the cold and snow!

Last Friday I had to drive 45 minutes to visit a client. It was oh so cold and blustery!
I didn't take this picture, but this is what my drive looked like.
I had to hold tight onto the steering wheel with both hands!
I drive a small Ford Focus hatchback and she handled the pressures!
Lots of praying too!!!

I have two nursing jobs that I love.
My main job is working for a family doctor four days a week. The other is a casual job that requires travel to the client's home for training.
I always try to arrange the timing so I have some time to find shopping in the area where I'll be.
I only made two stops as opposed to the four stops I had planned due to the extreme ccccold!

Here are my thrify finds at the first shop.
I think I mentioned before that I love candles. I have them on all the time. I especially like white or light-coloured candles. I couldn't believe there were so many in one package.
The napkins are from Amsterdam with various Dutch phrases related to good eating.
I'm going to use if for a project that I saw at Heaven's Walk.
Cookie Crunch scented candles...mmmm!
Taper candles...17 of them! Such a deal!
Yarn, I love yarn. I'm a sewer (not as much as I used to), so it always comes in handy.

Well that was my first stop.
Here's what I found at the second shop.
Everything in this shop was 50% off. I spent a total of $4.57.
There was something simple and unique about these finds that drew me to them.
I love the design on this bottle! It can be used at a candle holder or a vase.
I paid 12.5 cents for this little bottle/vase.
I kept cutting the end of the stem bit by bit until it didn't touch the bottom of the jar to prevent the flower from bobbing around.
There's always another spot for a cute vase with a flower.
Love it!
Cute finds to warm the heart on a cold day!

This cute thing wasn't found in a shop, but I thought I would add her in cause she's so sweet.
Her name is Maddy.

Hope you're staying warm on these very cold days!

Blessings, Diane
