Thrifty Coffee Table Makeover

I've been looking for a coffee table to makeover for quite awhile.

 It had to be the right size for our small living room,

as well as a bit on the taller side so that the tails of our cats

wouldn't dip in our food and drink as they passed by.

 

 

Occasionally, I will make a stop at Habitat for Humanity

which is not far from my house. 

At this visit, I saw this table as well as a dry sink.

I wanted both.

I also needed the van to haul them back home,

 as well as the OK from hubby

to bring them home.

 

 

As you can see, it came home with me.

We were able to get a deal by purchasing both.

I started painting before I took the original picture,

but you can see here what it looked like

prior to the paintbrush hitting it.

 

 

I believe this is actually a side table,

but it is big enough for our small cozy living room.

I really like the unique character of the legs of the table,

as well as the square design at each corner.

 

 

It took me awhile to decide how and what colour/s to paint it.

Since the furniture is white, I decided on a darker colour for the table

and then paint the corners an off white.

This is where I needed to tape.

 

I made my own chalk paint using Lowe's brand of

 Valspar paint + primer in the colour Noir.

I was looking for black and it's amazing how many different colours of black there are.

This colour is a very, very, dark grey, that looks "close" to black.

Two coats of  clear wax was applied to the legs and sides of the table.

 

 

The corners were painted with some paint leftover from another project.

I applied clear wax and then a touch of dark wax.

 

 

I applied three coats of polyurethane to the top of the table.

I used wax on the top for other projects before but the wax and paint wear off,

and I do not feel like re-waxing all of my projects every few months.

 

 

I like how it turned out.

It has a unique look to it, that you won't find in the store.

 

 

I quickly threw something together to put on the table.

I think a smaller rectangle doily or a place mat will look better.

 

 

I bought a vintage family Bible that I found at a thrift shop

and thought it would fit perfect in the heart of the living room.

 

 I topped it with some ironstone.

(I have the Bible closed now, but I do like the look of an open Bible.)

 

 

It blends well with the other splashes of black in the room.

 

 

There will be a few other changes in here soon.

I'm still working on my corner cabinet to go where the make-shift hutch is right now.

As well, we were blessed with free laminate so it will be good-bye to the carpet.

The pillows need some updating, so that will be a project when the snow starts falling.

It was a beautiful sunny day when I took these pictures.

This room is cozy day and night.

 

 

 

It definitely adds more character to our living space.

I may have to open a shop soon!

I see so many things to paint but I don't have enough space to keep it all!

Re "Vase" alized!

How's that for a new word?!

 

 

Pretty good considering it's near midnight right now.

 

 

My sister gave me this vase as a gift several years ago.

My colour scheme was a bit different back then.

I didn't want to get rid of it, because of course, my beloved sister gave it to me.

So I decided to make it work with my colours now.

 

 

My sister Renita and I (a few years ago but we still look the same!)

 

 

I painted it with Annie Sloan's Old Ochre Chalk Paint.

It needed a few coats.

I painted the bottom black, just using folk art paint from Michael's.

I applied a clear wax to the whole vase.

 

 

I applied Annie Sloan's dark wax to the raised design on the vase.

When the vase looked satisfactory, I applied two coats of Mod Podge

so that it would be easy to wipe if it got wet,

since it is a vase.

 

 

Re "Vase" alized!

The dictionary meaning for re·vi·tal·ize is:

 

imbue (something) with new life and vitality.

 

 

I went to Michael's in search of some type of floral wonder

to grace this revitalized creation.

 

 

I don't know the name of these flowers, but they were 50% off

and they totally match the vase!

 

 

I found the flowers to put in the vase, but where to put the vase?

On another one of my painted projects of course!

 

 

This little table was another thrift find.

I painted it with homemade chalk paint using Lowes colour of Brandied Pears.

It was covered in clear wax.

 

 

I love doilies and I love the tatting (I think that's what it is) on this.

 

 

Overall, it came together nicely.

I added a piece of jute to tie at the base to hide the imperfections there.

It may or may not stay.

 

 

And that's the story of a vase that became re"Vase"alized!

Paint, Lace, and Old Hymn Pages

...is what I used for this...

 

 

I kinda like how it turned out.

I knew I wanted to Mod Podge something on the top of the table,

I just wasn't sure what.

 

 

I decided on using some hymn pages from an old hymnal.

A few years ago, an antique store had a clearance section of old books.

I snatched up quite a few hymn books for projects.

 

 

I pulled out pages with titles that ministered to me.

 

 

I arranged them first and then put a small piece of frog tape on so they would stay together.

(You could also use sticky tack underneath, I just didn't have any)

 

I thought there would be less of a chance of the paper ripping

when I took the tape off if I used the Frog Tape.

 

I made a crease all around the table except for the straight edge.

Then I carefully flipped the whole thing together and cut along the inside of the creased line,

and then put it back on top of the table.

 

 

I applied Mod Podge on the table a bit at a time starting at one end,

and immediately putting the sheets on.

(It was hard to take pictures doing this part)

Then I very carefully took the tape off and applied Mod Podge several times to the entire top.

A small amount of the ink came off when the tape came off but it actually adds to the vintage look.

 

 

There were a couple of air pockets but they eventually worked themselves out.

(That's why you have to do a bit at a time! It dries pretty quick.)

Give it a few coats to glue it and seal it.

 

 

Beautiful titles to some old hymns.

 

 

I painted the piece of the table where the lace is black, but it just didn't look right.

Then I thought about gluing some flat lace on top.

I have to say it adds a nice vintage touch.

The table is sealed with clear wax with touches of dark wax for the distressed look.

 

 

I made my own chalk paint from Lowe's Olympic ICON,

and the colour of the paint is Brandied Pears.

The recipe I use is: 3 tablespoons plaster of paris mixed with two tablespoons of warm water.

Stir the mixture well into one cup of latex paint of your colour choosing.

Chalk Paint Class and Shop

We have a new shop in town called The Dandelion.

They just started selling Annie Sloan Paint and supplies.

They have been offering classes and so a friend of mine and went this past Saturday.

There were six in the class and each station looked like this.

We did different techniques and I am so glad I took the class.

The couple who own this shop are so nice and helpful.

We got a 10% off purchases made after our class.

I bought a medium brush and a small sample of paint

for a few small winter projects (like a picture frame).

They sell lovely home décor as well.
