Thrifty Picture Find #2

I came across this picture in the summer.
I saw the black frame first.
Black always makes me take a second look.

When I pulled it up, I just thought, "Ahhhh".
A young lady,
 sitting at the spinning wheel,
hand-stitched,
in black cross-stitch.

Finding a place for all my wonderful picture finds
is always a challenge.

But pictures don't always have to be hung on the wall.
They can easily be tucked in with a vignette.

I have the picture sitting on an old singer sewing machine table,
leaning against a small vintage ironing board.

I added a few Fall touches.
A small white ceramic pumpkin that I purchased at our local grocery store.
A handmade primitive pear that came in a set of three,
can easily be tucked in.

I made up this Fall candle with the glass jar purchased at the dollar store.
The mason jar was attached to the bottom piece and had a lid on it.
It's much easier than gluing the two pieces together!

I added some mini pumpkin pods and set a glass votive inside.
I love the look of a candle and I have them throughout my home.

I think she looks pretty sitting there.
For now.
Soon, the Christmas décor will be coming out,
and she may go into hiding for a little while.

But for now, she is sitting pretty with the other antique and thrifty finds.

We just had our Canadian Thanksgiving this past weekend.
It was a beautiful sunny and warm weekend.
But the weather has been changing.
More Fall like.
Cool outside and cozy inside.

Sending warm and cozy blessings to you,

Unexpected Ironstone Find...With A Dutch Twist

A few weeks ago, on my way home from visiting my folks,
I stopped in at an antique mall
to stretch my legs (wink, wink).

This mall has three floors and they are full.
I couldn't spend a lot of time looking since I still had another 2 hours to drive before getting home.

I wasn't looking for anything in particular.
I never do.
That's the best part.
Usually when I am looking for something, I can't find it.
So...
when I'm not looking for anything I tend to find something.
That happens when shopping for clothes as well.
Wonder why that is??
Less pressure??

I was on the second floor at the very back and middle aisle,
quickly scanning a hutch full of stuff.
I'm sure you can imagine it.
As my eyes are working their way down to the middle of the hutch,
I notice some insulators with electrical cords coming from them.
I think, "This is different", so I walk over to pick one up.
Someone had the bright idea to put little lights in them.

Not sure what an insulator is?

It's these two glass pieces you see here.
They were used as insulators for hydro lines.
They don't use them anymore.

As I lifted it up to inspect it further I noticed the plate that they were sitting on.

Be still my little Dutch heart!
I lifted up the plate and rested the insulators on the next plate sitting there.
It was beautiful!!
It was black and white and had windmills in it.
AND
it was only $16.00!!
That was one item I did not have to think twice about.

It has a lovely scalloped designed edge.

A lovely windmill scene in the centre of the plate.
You can see the worn patina.

I spent some time trying to get it displayed to my satisfaction.
I thought it would be nice to have a few other Dutch items around it.

This Bible belonged to my father.
Even though he's still with us, I thought it suited perfectly.

I love these little primitive candles
You can place them anywhere for effect.
This little one takes one AA battery.
You can loosen it to stop the light from working when you don't need it.

I think it all works well together.

The two pictures on the wall are Dutch as well,
and were thrifty finds.

I found this picture this past weekend while on a road trip with a friend.
The frame caught my attention first.

I love the old style clothes she is wearing.
There's even a cat in the picture!
It looks like a watercolour painting.

When I looked at the back of the frame,
it had a sticker on it from the place of purchase,
as well as the name of the artist.

I didn't have to think twice about this treasure either.

This picture I've had for awhile,
but it too was found at an antique store.

"A Flower Girl in Holland"
I like the sepia colouring to the picture.

I'm currently stripping a vintage wall unit I purchased a few months ago.
It's definitely been learning curve for me.
So this corner will look a little different soon.
Hopefully!

I hope you enjoyed my little Dutch treasures.
I was born here, but my parents were born in the Netherlands,
and emigrated to Canada when they were adults.

Have you found any sweet treasures lately?

Blessings to you,

Creating a Vintage Vignette

Putting a vignette together is fun and challenging,
BUT
it can be very time consuming.
At least that is how it is for me.
I have a lot of "stuff"
and that means there is a lot of "stuff" to work with.
Arranging...
  Rearranging...
And rearranging again.
"Does this look good?"
 OR
 "Does this look better?"

So, it helps if you have a plan in mind.
Consider the space you have and balancing the space in width and height.
I decided that I was going to utilize an assortment of vintage type pieces.
My "space" was the top of our TV cabinet.
(We still have the big box flat screen TV.)
I also wanted to incorporate a variety of materials
 such as:
glass, wood, lace, paper, candlelight, tin, and baskets.
This is what I came up with.
After going through a lot of "stuff",
and
Rearranging "several" times.
The first thing I knew I needed was something
that was tall enough to cover the thermostat on the wall,
but also easy enough to move, (much to my husband's chagrin!)
A stack of vintage baskets are perfect because they are so light.
The clock I found at Giant Tiger (for you Canadians)
It has a vintage look to it and for $10.00 it was a quick purchase.
I placed it on top of a few old books to create more height.
You can't have a vintage look without the old jars.
I chose a smaller green ball jar to add a bit of colour.
I love flowers in vintage bottles and two of them fit perfectly in this old box.
A white rose in one and a candle in the other.
The flowers don't have to be real.
This one isn't.
It looks lovely just the same.

A bit of lace on vintage books.
Again, I used old books to raise the lantern to balance the height on either side of the vignette.
A vintage glass electrical insulator add another "touch of glass"

The lantern is a recent purchase from Ikea.
Even though it is new, lanterns represent another time.
A primitive electric drip candle adds a cozy small light to the vignette.
Here is a small list of suggested items to use to create a vintage vignette.

Paper (old photos, books, old scrapbooks, postcards, ephemera)
Glass (mason or crown jars, milk bottles, medicine, elixir, vintage glass electrical insulators)
Tin (oil cans, cookie tin, weigh scale, flour sifter, scoops, toolbox, old maple syrup buckets)
Wood (sewing drawers, cheese box, crates, signs, frames, old spools, old bowls, ladles, game boards)
Light (oil lamp, lantern, candles, multiple tea lights)
Timepiece (clocks, alarm clocks, old pocket watches, vintage cameras)
Fabric (lace, burlap, homespun, doilies, quilts, runners, old samplers, hand stitching, make do's)
Baskets (strawberry, picnic, sewing, lunch, tobacco)
Tarnished Silver (jugs, trays, silverware, ice buckets, goblets, trophies)
Ceramics (clay pots, transferware, ironstone, crocks)
Vintage Suitcases
and I better stop because I keep thinking of something else!
You get the idea.

With a wide space, you can create smaller vignettes to make one large vignette.
Here I was able to put three groupings together.
I've been creating vignettes long before I knew they were called that.
I got so many ideas from shops,
and then more and more home magazines were available,
and now of course we have so many wonderful blogs and pinterest to help our creativity.

Not sure how long this will last, but I have a few other spaces to tend to first.
Stay tuned.

Have a wonderful weekend!
Blessings,

Using Vintage Graters in a Vignette

I've been admiring so many beautiful Spring and Easter creations,
and I was planning to create a meaningful Easter vignette in my entranceway...
and then I got sick.
Yep.
I had the most awful sinus infection.
I was down for the count.
We didn't even visit family for Easter.
My husband was recovering from his bout with bronchitis.
It was just nasty.

But I'm all better now!
I've been rearranging all weekend, so I'll have more pictures to share soon.
I bought some flowers. Three different stems to create a simple wildflower look.
Very inexpensive.
That was the first piece.
I don't know about you, but I can spend a very long time deciding on a vignette.
I mean, a loooooong time!
This is one of my weaknesses.
Indecisive.
I came across these rusty graters when I was looking for something else.
I like the look with the tea lights shining through.
When I saw this idea, I kept my eyes open for three different old graters.
Rusty graters sitting in a rustic wooden tray.

In keeping with Spring, I added this white bird that I just bought.
It was going to be a part of a vignette in my entrance way.
Beauty and Light
I've had the little church for quite awhile.
Back from my country days.
It's been everywhere! I don't think I'll ever get rid of it.
I have scented tea lights lit here, but you could use the battery operated tea lights.
It adds a cozy warm look to the kitchen.
Cozy always makes my heart smile.
A nice mix of different materials.
Glass, tin, ceramic, wood, and a white lace doily.
Here's a mix of the feline kind.
They make me smile too.

Have a blessed week!
